Originally formed as Number 1 Helicopter Flight in September 1951, it was renamed VH 21 under the US system of numbering and then Detachment No. 3 of the squadron became known as HU 21 in April 1955. It later disbanded in July 1972 when VT 406 Squadron assumed its aircrew training functions.
Role: Served as the RCN's helicopter utility squadron performing such duties as Search & Rescue, Training, Transport, Carrier Onboard Delivery and Carrier Plane Guard.
