There is no doubt in our minds that the Museum would not be able to operate without our volunteers. Because of this, we are always looking for people interested in donating some of their time and skills to help us out, no matter how little or how much ! In most areas where volunteers are required, an introduction and appropriate training will be provided by both staff and the more-experienced volunteers. In specific cases such as Aircraft Restoration, an appropriate background would be required (ie. flight mechanic, etc.).
Most of the volunteer activities here would be shifts of roughly 4 hours maybe twice a month depending on the type of work. For obvious reasons, the majority of the work that has to be done would require someone in the local region of Halifax . However, some tasks such as research could possibly be conducted from afar and passed on through correspondence such as E-Mail; please
inquire if you are interested in such an arrangement.
Benefits of volunteering with us include satisfaction that you are helping a worthy cause, a valuable resumé reference (for those interested) and a 10% discount off of any purchase in our Gift Shop.
The following list briefly outlines the duties and requirements of each area of volunteering:
Guide Duties: To assist both with self-guided tours by answering questions & pointing out items of interest OR to give a guided tour of the Museum (usually with groups of various ages). Prerequisite: No previous experience required, but an ability to interact well with people and a good general background knowledge of Naval Aviation, Shearwater, etc. would be considered helpful assets.
Gift Shop Duties: To serve as a cashier in the Gift Shop using a computer as a register, as well as helping organize the shop, restock shelves, etc. as required. Prerequisite: No previous experience required, but an ability to interact well with people and accuracy with money would be considered important assets.
Workshop & Exhibit Production Duties: To construct & organize both cases and the displays themselves to be shown in the Museum Exhibit Area. Most likely, a particular volunteer or group of volunteers would be assigned to a specific project which would be advised by the Museum Curator. The majority of this type of work would occur over the winter months. Prerequisite: Depending on the project at hand, some experience or background would be required. For construction of displays, carpentry or appropriate related skills would be definite assets, and for actual development of displays, a related background to the display being produced would be a great help.
Computers Duties: This can range from straight data entry to working on sections of the Museum Web Site. The potential in this area is large in the sense that a lot of the tasks within the Museum are becoming computerized and we would welcome assistance in making the transition. We have a lot of potential projects that in some cases are only lacking in manpower. Prerequisite: Data entry is the primary task at hand, so keyboarding skills would be a definite asset. In the area of the Web Site, HTML skills (even just basic) would be a must; anything over and above that such as Java or CGI would be absolutely great! If you have any other computer skills such as graphics creation, etc., please inquire with us as we welcome any input in this area.
Aircraft Restoration Duties: The disassembly, restoration and reassembly of vintage aircraft. The primary restoration taking place is our Fairey Firefly F.R. I which we are aiming to restore to airworthy condition. Other projects might follow depending on procurement of other airframes. As well, when the Museum has expanded into the new proposed facility, we will be looking for assistance to refurbish, repaint, etc. the current aircraft in our collection that are presently outdoors. Prerequisite: Highly-related experience dealing with maintenance and construction of aircraft (ie. airframe, avionics, aeroengine technician, etc.) is a must. If you do have the required background, we definitely would invite you to participate in the project as it is currently on a 5-year schedule.
Marketing & Public Relations Duties: To assist in promoting the Museum to the general public, as well as several target groups; the goal of which would be to increase attendance at the Museum and create public interest in our mandate and possibly to aid fundraising efforts. Prerequisite: No previous experience required, but a marketing or public relations background would be a great asset especially when organizing activities. We also require people willing to man booths and/or displays in malls, going out to visit tourist bureaus, etc.
Fundraising Duties: To work, most likely in cooperation with the SAM Foundation (our non-profit fundraising arm), in raising monies through various projects to fund certain exhibits, marketing efforts and in the long-term our expansion plans. Prerequisite: No previous experience required, but good organizational abilities would be a definite asset.
Library & Archives Duties: To aid in the cataloguing, classifying, identifying and proper archival of books, documents and photographs from many different sources into an easily usable system accessible to the public. Prerequisite: No previous experience required, but knowledge of library classification and/or maritime aviation in general (depending on the task at hand) would be helpful assets.
Clerical Duties: Assisting with filing and general paperwork associated with day-to-day operation of the Museum. Prerequisite: No previous experience required, but good organizational skills, as well as keyboarding skills would be definite assets.
Museum Research Duties: Quite often to research particular topics either requested by a third party, or for a given Museum project. A variety of methods would be used including books, documents, online catalogues, public archives and the INTERNET. Prerequisite: No previous experience required, but good research skills (and a lot of patience at times) would be important assets.
